Plastik versus Glas 👀

Plastic Versus Glass 👀

Why we switched to recycled plastic but still use a mixed version with glass.

An unfilled, open plastic bottle weighs around 20 grams. Once filled and screwed on, the bottles can also be stacked on top of each other in the truck, which is of great importance for shipping throughout Austria. Glass naturally has notable advantages - for example, it is reusable, is ideal for a deposit cycle and is chemically inert (i.e. the glass molecules do not mix with the contents). However, an unfilled glass bottle weighs 182 grams, which makes it more than 9 times heavier than a plastic bottle. This means a higher CO2 balance, especially in transport, as more trucks and journeys are needed for the same number of glass bottles. 🚛 In addition, glass bottles can only be stacked to a limited extent, the risk of breakage is higher and the trucks reach the maximum permissible transport weight - even when not fully filled. Since glass – in the cosmetics industry – is not returned to a deposit system, the high energy expenditure for new glass production and old glass recycling is not justifiable in our case.

We think that no packaging at all would be the best packaging. But because that is not entirely possible, we are committed to continually dealing with the issue and finding the most sustainable (not always the easiest) solution for us. Promised. 🌿
